Poverty Poem
Masaoka Shiki: Selected Poems by Shiki Masaoka, X Here are graceful and timeless poems by one of Japans greatest modern writers, rendered by a master translator. Masaoka Shiki (1867-1902) is credited with modernizing Japans two traditional verse forms, haiku and tanka. Born at a time of social and cultural change in Japan, Shiki welcomed the new influences from the West and responded to them by reinvigorating the native haiku and tanka forms. He freed them from outdated conventions, made them viable for artistic expression in modern Japan, and paved the way for the haiku to become one of his nations most influential cultural exports. Burton Watsons excellent introduction explores the course of Shikis life: his poverty-stricken childhood, his early love for literature, his education, and his work as a haiku editor for the newspaper" Nippon," and as a correspondent during the Sino-Japanese war. Watson details Shikis long struggle with tuberculosis and its poignant expression in his poetry. Confined to bed for months before his death, Shiki continued to devote his energies to literary pursuits: writing poems and critical essays, and joining with friends and followers who gathered in his sickroom to discuss literature. He died a few weeks before his thirty-fifth birthday. These poems -more than a hundred haiku, several tanka, and three kanshi -are arranged chronologically within each genre, revealing the development of Shikis art and the seamless way in which he wove his life and illness into his poetry.
The Time Tree: Selected Poems of Huu Thinh by Huu Thinh, "The Time Tree "includes representative selections from poems by a veteran who was born into poverty and tempered in the crucible of war and who devoted himself to rigorous study to become a leading intellectual and award-winning poet of Vietnam. Clear, precise imagery, a sense of history, and a balance of passion and reflection characterize Huu Thinh's poetry, whether his subject is love, war, struggle, or poverty. Huu Thinh was born in 1942 in Vietnam. During the war, he served as a tank driver and later as a journalist. Currently he is the editor-in-chief of the literary journal "Van Nghe "and deputy general secretary of the Vietnam Writers' Association. He has published five books of poetry in Vietnam and won numerous awards for his work.
Poverty reduction - Poverty reduction or poverty alleviation is the weak form of poverty eradication. Two types of poverty are recognised - income poverty and non income poverty. Culture of poverty - The culture of poverty concept is a social theory explaining the cycle of poverty. Based on the concept that the poor have a unique value system, the culture of poverty theory suggests the poor remain in poverty because of their adaptations to the burdens of poverty. Poverty in the United States - There is significant disagreement about poverty in the United States; particularly over how poverty ought to be defined. Using radically different definitions, two major groups of advocates have claimed variously (a) that the United States has eliminated poverty over the last century; or (b) that it has such a severe crisis of poverty that it ought to devote significantly more resources to the problem. Symphonic poem - A symphonic poem or tone poem is a piece of orchestral music, in one movement in which some extra-musical programme provides a narrative or illustrative element. This programme could come from a poem, a novel, a painting or some other source.
